History of St. Catherine's British School

True to its name, St. Catherine's British School first opened in 1956 on the grounds of the British Embassy in Athens. At the time, there were little to no British schools in the Greek capital yet, just a few American academic institutions. Since the British community in Athens had already grown exponentially after World War II, however, the expats in the city noticed a need for a school for their kids. Hence, St. Catherine's British School was established. It started as a fairly small school that taught the children of the British Embassy workers, but over time, it grew to welcome students of various nationalities.

What is St. Catherine's British School's Campus Like?

St. Catherine's British School has since moved from its original location on the grounds of the British Embassy to Likovrisi, one of the outer suburban neighborhoods of Athens. Technically, it is its own town that's simply near the Greek capital, specifically located in Attica, north of the city center. This location in a more rural part of the city allows it to have a massive campus with all the standard school facilities. Not only does St. Catherine's British School have spacious classrooms and well-equipped laboratories, but it boasts a massive auditorium, a well-stocked library, and ample outdoor spaces.

The St. Catherine's British School Student Body

From what started as a fairly small school built to accommodate British expats' children, St. Catherine's British School now has one of the biggest student bodies among all international schools in Athens. Today, the school welcomes a whopping 1,300 students per year, including both new enrollees and those returning who haven't graduated yet. Their ages range from as young as 3 years old to as old as 18 years old, all spread throughout the educational institution's different departments. As if to prove its status as a bonafide international school in the Greek capital, St. Catherine's British School's student body also has as many as 54 nationalities.

What is St. Catherine's British School's Curriculum?

St. Catherine's British School follows suit in other British schools in Athens when it comes to its curriculum. The school follows the National Curriculum of England and Wales from its pre-K to middle school years. The famous academic program focuses on teaching a set of subjects for all students, namely English (Language & Literature), Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), and one of four Modern Languages. This also means that what students learn here is virtually the same as those in the top schools in London, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, and more. For the final two years, the school offers the prestigious IB Diploma Program.

How Much Does It Cost to Study at St. Catherine's British School?

As a private British school in Athens, it's no surprise that St. Catherine's British School is fairly expensive. It's distinctly pricey when you consider how high the living costs in Athens already are. So how much would cost to send your kid to school here? Its tuition fees range from €9,710.00 to €15,710.00 per year, namely from nursery to senior high school. While these aren't exactly the highest tuition fees imposed among the many schools in Athens, they're still right up there and are undoubtedly expensive. The school also imposes other fees, including a €150.00 application fee, a €1,000.00 registration fee, and bus fees that cost around €2,089.00 to €2,806.00 per year.

Where is St. Catherine's British School in Athens?

As already mentioned, St. Catherine's British School is located in Likovrisi, an outer suburb of Athens. Similar to other districts of its kind, Likovrisi is a smaller and more provincial town near the Greek capital. It's distinctly more rural too, placing its residents nearer to nature than the urban hustle and bustle of Athens. Fortunately, this also makes Likovrisi a much more peaceful alternative to living in the city center which, in turn, also makes it safe and more suitable for families. Apart from the great school nearby, the town also has some of the most affordable luxury rentals in Athens.
