Ares

Don't you just think that the Netherlands is such a mysterious country? Sure, from the outside, it seems like a happy-go-lucky destination with wooden clogs for dancing and beautiful windmills that make their landscape beautiful. However, one can't help but feel that under such a light facade lies some darkness. And in terms of their series, "Ares" personifies this to a tee. The protagonist Rosa is a first-year medical student in Amsterdam and, apart from pursuing her studies, is hell-bent on entering a secret society called "Ares." Little does she know, however, that there's more to being in this "society" than what meets her eye!

The show chronicles the life of Willem Holleeder, one of the Netherlands' most notorious and infamous crime lords. The plot mostly takes its cues from the book his sister wrote, detailing Holleeder's humble beginning to his descent to a life of crime. So, where the treachery in this. Monic Hendrickx plays Carmen van Walraven-de Rue, whose late husband turned out to be one of the most important heads of an entire criminal organization. Now, she has to take the runs herself, especially in order to protect and safeguard her family. What she doesn't realize, however, that this world is far more dangerous than she could have ever imagined.

Want any more proof that the Netherlands has a dark side? Watch their Netflix hit, "Tabula Rasa." Here, a young woman awakens in a sanitarium with no recollection of how she got there. She then becomes a major witness and the prime suspect for the disappearance of a man she was last seen with. But as the police bar her from leaving the facility, she takes it upon herself to go out of her way and retrace her steps to how she came about being in the sanitorium and what exactly is her involvement with the missing man.

Though "Undercover" is not an exclusively Dutch production, and in fact, it's shot and set in Belgium, the series has become so popular in the country that it's considered to be one. A crime thriller that gets more exciting with each new episode, it tells the story of two secret agents who pose as campers in a camping ground that's frequently visited by a drug kingpin. Inspired by real events, the agents risk their lives in their attempt to infiltrate the head honcho's criminal operations. Will they make it out alive and catch the bad guy?
